Taking stringent action against illegal sand miners, the Uttar Pradesh irrigation department has lodged a complaint with the Gautam Budh Nagar police against 55 people. The department has alleged that sand mafia is indulging in rampant unauthorized mining in the floodplains of Hindon and Yamuna rivers. Officials have alleged that despite their complaint, which was submitted to the district police on March 30, cops are yet to take any action.
UP irrigation officials warn that with the monsoon, the illegally excavated earth from the flood zone area near Kambakspur, Kondli, Chaproli, etc villages could cause damage to the embankments and the area may witness massive flooding. In a letter to the district magistrate, officials have asked to put a stop to the illegal sand mining and take immediate penal action against the mafia against their compliant already filed with the district police.
Sources said that the district magistrate has written to the Gautam Budh Nagar senior superintendent of police to take necessary action. According to district administration officials, under the growing stress of environmentalists, the state police in association with district officials have in the past taken various steps to curb sand mining in the district including the formation of a special mining squad to tackle the growing menace.
